The Ultimate Underwater Adventure

Meet Dawn Kernagis

Welcome to OZTek2019
Dawn Kernagis - Diver (cave, technical & freedive), researcher and trail blazer...

A Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC), Dawn is currently developing new ways to optimise performance and resilience for humans operating in extreme environments, such as undersea divers, high altitude aviators, and astronauts.

Dawn has won multiple research awards for her research on decompression stress, CNS oxygen toxicity, novel treatment approaches for acute brain injury and diver health outcomes in scuba divers.

A diver and leader on numerous underwater exploration, research, and conservation projects around the world, Dawn was also selected as one of six crew members to join NASA’s 21st undersea mission, NEEMO, (NASA's Extreme Environment Mission Operations) project - in which astronauts and scientists spend weeks living in an underwater habitat as a prelude to future inter-planetary exploration.

The six-crew lived in simulated spacecraft conditions and conducting simulated spacewalks outside of their undersea habitat.
